The expanded notation method breaks a big number up into smaller numbers that're easier to work with. For example, for 82, you should first look at the 8, which is in the tens place (8 x 10), and then the 2, which is in the ones place (2 x 1). So together, 82 is ( (8 x 10) + (2 x 1) ), which equals (80 + 2). Now, you can multiply both 80 and 2 by 3: (80 x 3) + (2 x 3) = 240 + 6 = 246.
