Komunyakaa describes how the soldiers are using different items to disguise themselves. For example, using branches and mud to cover themselves, their head and face. By using the term 'Chimera', Komunyakaa is referring to a mythological creature that is a hybrid of parts of different animals. The soldiers' disguise, consists of different elements as the mythology refers too.
