I believe the aqueduct may be the greatest Roman contribution to technology. The transferring of water from a distant source to the average Roman town or city prompted the growth of urban areas in the Empire. Water was traditionally drawn frequently from nearby wells and rivers. The aqueduct’s ability to supply and drive water to other places foreshadowed the way water would be obtained in modern times.
