Memantine is an NMDA-receptor antagonist which regulates the activity of glutamate, the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the CNS. This causes decreased glutaminergic activity in the brain. Although memantine does not cure Alzheimer's disease, memory and awareness can be improved by the drug. Common side effects of memantine are dizziness, confusion, abnormal crying, and other psychotic side effects that is why the patient's behavioral patterns should be examined closely before initiating treatment.
