It allows for more suspense and isn’t always obvious the first time it’s seen. Authors use it to make people pay attention to what’s happening so they don’t miss it. Hope this helps!!

Well, it's to leave suspense as I wonder "hey! How'd it get to this point!" as foreshadowing as something in the future. It also keeps the reader interested (at least most of the time) as they probably want to know how it happened and how it got there.
