The main way in which life in the Chesapeake region was very different from life in New England for early settlers was that the economy of the Chesapeake region was almost entirely crop-based, with things like tobacco meaning a major export, whereas the economy in New England was centered around shipbuilding, fishing, and other less-agricultural practices.
