b + g = 42
b = 2/5g

2/5g + g = 42
2/5g + 5/5g = 42
7/5g = 42
g = 42 / (7/5)
g = 42 * 5/7
g = 210/7
g = 30 <== there are 30 girls

b = 2/5g
b = 2/5(30)
b = 60/5
b = 12 <=== there are 12 boys
