Where did the "Byzantine" in Byzantine Empire come from

Byzantine Empire was called like this afterwards by historians to distinguish it from the Roman empire, which is how people called it at the time.

it was named after its capital, Byzantium (which was renamed to Constantinopole). Byzantium was the name that the Greek gave when they established a colony on that spot.
