On the allied side, the British and Americans played a pivotal role, while the Canadians, Australians and the free french resistance nonetheless had important roles as well. This operation was overseen by Commander Eisenhower. On the German side, field marshals Rundstedt and Rommel oversaw defensive measures on the Normandy beaches.
