remember, we can do anything to an equation as long as we do it to both sides

add like terms
2(x-8)=6x
divide both sides by 2
x-8=3x
minus x both sides
-8=2x
divide both sides by 2
-4=x
x=-4

the value of x that makes the eqaution true is -4
