Like the Irish, the Germans sought refuge in the United States, beginning in 1848. After a series of failed rebellions that plagued the continent of Europe, the Germans headed for the states as a mean of escaping the political turmoil of their country. Unlike the Irish, the Germans sought the wide open spaces of the Midwest. The majority of Germans settled in Wisconsin and Missouri.
