Respiration is the process by which living organisms produce energy. Animals meet their energy requirements by carrying out respiration and combining glucose with oxygen. This leads to the production of energy as well as a number of waste products including carbon dioxide and water. Organisms can also follow an alternative metabolic pathway which does not involve the use of oxygen and is called anaerobic respiration.
