7x+2y=-48 subtract one the one equation from the other to cancel out a variable
-7x+y=60
________
3y=12        divide by 3
y=4            put in y for an equation

-7x + 4=60 subtract 4
-7x=56 divide by -7
x=-8

so, your answer is...x=-8 and y=4
