When the monarchs claimed more power in the sixteenth century, this led to the principle known as the Divine Right of Kings.

What was the Divine Rights of Kings?

This was a principle used by European monarchs to justify their rule by claiming that they were chosen by God to rule.

This meant that going against the monarch meant going against God which would be sinful and an abomination.
