A triangle has two sides of length 6 and 12. What is the smallest possible whole-number length for the third side?

Answer: 7

To maximize the length of the third side, which I'll call x, it needs to be one of the two shorter sides.

So by the triangle inequality theorem, 6+x>12 meaning the minimum whole number value of x is 7.
