They both are formed in strong thunderstorms.

Both hail and tornadoes are forms of severe weather that originate from thunderstorms, most often an especially powerful class of thunderstorms called supercells.

It is fairly common for hail to accompany tornadoes.

If any thunderstorm produces hail at least 1 inch in diameter, winds of 58 mph or greater, or a tornado it is classified as severe.
