The outer layer gives rise to the periderm, a temporary covering that is shed once the inner layer differentiates to form a true epidermis. The inner layer, called the basal layer (or stratum germinativum), is a germinal epithelium that gives rise to all the cells of the epidermis (Figure 12.32).
