A rock can become a sediments through erosion or weathering. These sediments can then compress and compact to become a sedimentary rock.

As successive layers of sediment settle on top of one another, the sediment near the bottom is compressed, hardens, and forms sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rock may be broken down into sediment once again by weathering and erosion
