Most ozone (about 90%) is found in the stratosphere, which begins at about 10–16 kilometres above Earth's surface and extends to an altitude of about 50 kilometres. Ozone in the stratosphere protects life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation and is therefore often called 'good' ozone.
