Answer:

The balance between the individual and society may not be harmonious, but an individual's choice (you) are applied to society as a whole. If someone just pays attention to themselves and we don't help each other out we can't function properly. You need to be able to take care of yourself, but help out others so society can function smoothly. It is a balance between self-interest and helping others.
