Ali has some sweets he gives Mike 1/8 of them and gives suzie 1/4 of them, how many does he have left.

To make things a bit easier you can make suzie’s fraction, 1/4, have the same denominator as Mike. Multiply the denominator by 2 to get 8 and since you multiplied the denominator by 2 you do the same to the numerator which makes the fraction now 2/8 instead of 1/4. Now you can easily do the problem if there’s a total of 8 sweets and 2 + 1 are given away. Now there’s only 5. Or 5/8
