It was  the capital of the Union. It blocked shipping lanes to the North. It served as a Confederate base before 1860. It protected commercial areas of the southern coast.

for sumter the north north could prevent any shipping coming in and out of charlestown. Charles town was important in the export of cotton necessary for the economic survival of the south
