What was the Lost Generation anguished about?

The term lost generation is commonly used for the generation that came of age during and shortly after WWI. The term is in reference to the enormous loss, economic turmoil, and suffering that occurred as a result of the war and its aftermath in the Western world. The term was made famous by Ernest Hemingway who used the term in some of his famous works.
