Astronomers and physicists naturally associate the term “big bang” with the origin of the universe. It may come as a surprise to learn that the first scientific paper with “big bang” in its title was received by the Journal of Meteorology two months before Hoyle coined his memorable phrase (Cox et al. 1949).
