Because the US traded goods with Cuba and assisted them in the Spanish American war( btw this information came from a article I found on Google hope this helps

Americans were sympathetic towards Cubans because they felt bad for what was going on and them previously being under Spanish rule. The U.S. sort of thought of Cuba as a kid that needed to be watched over, almost pity.
