You can tell immediately, by inspection, that this system of linear equations has a solution, because the two lines cross in exactly one point:  (-1, -1).  If the lines were parallel, and never touched one another, then:  no solution.  If the lines coincided, one lying directly on top the other, then there's be infinitely many solutions.
