Solve y = x^2 + 2 for x:

1) Isolate x^2:  x^2 = y - 2

2) Find the square root of this result:  x = plus or minus √(y-2)   (answer)

[tex]y = x^2 + 2[/tex]

To solve for  x we need to get x alone

[tex]y = x^2 + 2[/tex]

To get x alone, we need to remove +2

subtract 2 on both sides

[tex]y-2= x^2 + 2-2[/tex]

[tex]y-2 = x^2[/tex]

Take square root on both sides

[tex]+-\sqrt{y-2} = x[/tex]

We got x alone

[tex]x = +-\sqrt{y-2}[/tex]
