Use the power rule

[tex] (a^b)^c = a^{bc} [/tex]

To rewrite the equation as

[tex] 9^{2p} = 9^8 [/tex]

So, the two exponents have to be the same:

[tex] 2p = 8 \iff p=4 [/tex]
