So the equation to find the discriminant is [tex] b^2-4ac [/tex] , with a = x^2 coefficient, b = x coefficient, and c = constant. Using that formula, our equation is [tex] (-5)^2-4*3*4 [/tex]

  1. Firstly, solve the exponent and multiplications: [tex] 25-48 [/tex]
  2. Next, do the subtraction, and your discriminant is -23.

Now because the discriminant is less than zero, there are no real solutions.
