Several nations agreed to phase out the production of the CFCs after seeing evidence of a hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica. 
Ozone in the stratosphere absorbs harmful UV radiation from the sun and decrease in the ozone in the stratosphere could lead to an increase risk in skin cancer and cataracts and suppression of the immune system. Increase in UV can cause damage to plants and ecosystem. CFCs destroys the ozone once they reach the stratosphere.
