Two major groups who immigrated to the colonies were Germans and Scots-Irish. The first wave of Germans came in 1670, followed by several other waves throughout the 1700s. In fact, by the time of the Revolutionary War in the 1770s, 1/3 of Pennsylvania was populated by Germans (along with other states). Many Scots-Irish also emigrated to the colonies to avoid religious persecution.
